Atul Gawande: Being Mortal

I recently finished Being Mortal after many starts and stops with this book. It was incredibly touching, and thought provoking. In a lot of ways it's just a hard book to read. You have to be ready to look unflinchingly at the fragility of human life, and sit in the darkness of the end.

As in every stage of life there are good days and bad days. You can only take it one day at a time. But at some point there won't be a chance of things getting better.

Particularly powerful was the ending where he recounts his father’s last days on earth. I’ve never been close to someone who died, thank goodness. But it comes for us all. Our society is so separate from the natural process that makes it feel unnatural. So important to tell these stories.
